| History of Synchronized Swimming |
Synchronized swimming first
became recognized as a competitive sport in the
U.S. in 1945. It has been part of the Pan American
Games since 1955 and a part of the World Aquatic
Championship since 1973. Upon recognition by the
International Olympic Committee "Synchro"
débuted at the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles
in 1984. Since that time, the U.S. has dominated
the sport in the Olympics — winning gold
in solo and duet in 1984, gold in duet and silver
in solo in 1988, and "sweeping" the
solo (Kriscen Babb-Sprague) and duet gold (Karen
and Sarah Josephson) in Barcelona in 1992. At
the 1996 games in Atlanta, the team was included
for the first time. This level of competition
has propelled Synchro into the fastest growing
sport and possibly the best all around developmental
sport for girls today.
